WARDEN OF CALABRIAN PRISON IN ITALY, MARIA CARMELA LONGO, ARRESTED.

In perhaps a scene entirely reminiscent of Scorcese's Goodfellas, the mafiosos were given the keys to the prison in Reggio, Calabria at the Panzera prison.    Authorities arrested Longo on suspicion of external conspiracy and mafia association.   As a result of the arrest, Longo, whose plead not guilty was placed under house arrest.

Prosecutors in the case, have state that there has been systematic "violation after violation against the norms of the prison system, prison regulations and circulars from the prison administration, which was used to facilitate the mafia in prison," essentially giving them complete control of the prison.  The judge overseeing the case has stated that it's evident that Longo simply gave the mobsters the keys to the castle. Currently Longo is the director of the women's section of Rome's Rebibbia jail.   Inmates were having food brought in, narcotics brought in, and in other case wives, girlfriends, and in some instances hookers. Some of the inmates began using the prison as a base of operations for criminal activities.  The members of the mafia affiliated in this prison were all alleged N'drangeta members.   Story still developing...

N'DRANGHETA HAS OVER TAKEN TRADITIONAL SICILIAN MOB POWER WISE

The big debate is often, how big is N'drangheta or has big has the organization become.  For a long time scholars and law enforcement have said that while N'drangheta was enormous that they didn't think that traditional Sicilian Cosa Nostra, could ever be ousted as the number one criminal element in Italy, however in recent years it has changed.  Particularly the reign of Toto Riina ending, through Sicilian cosa nostra into many different direction.  However word had it the Inzerillo's are beginning to make some serious statements in Italy.   It was Riina who chased the Inzerillo's out of Italy completely, but now with Riina dead, it's been my source who told me that the Inzerillo's are making headway in Italy, more on that at a later date.

In the old days the Sicilians controlled the ebb and flow of narcotics distribution, but what we are seeing now is N'drangheta completely absorbing it, inflating it and controlling the value and prices. Just in 2008 N'drangheta claimed some $55 billion in profits, and since 2010 had been the mob powerhouse in Italy.  They are the wealthiest and richest of the mob in Italy in it's entirety and that wasn't always the case but N'drangheta has been able to get a strangle hold on the European division on the narcotics trade, something that that Sicilians have always controlled decades prior.   Sheer volume numbers wise, the Sicilian mafia, while still very powerful, doesn't have the numbers or areas or volume that the Sicilian's once had.  There is still money to go around no doubt, but the throne has changed in terms of who dictates what.  This may be why you're seeing such an audacious run in Canada by N'drangheta.
