SO WHOSE THE MOST POWERFUL NOW? THE GAMBINO'S

All the time I get questions from people asking me on the streets whose the most powerful of the Italian Mafia in New York City.  There is always an ebb and flow with these things, but with some research and conversations, here is where we stand.  If you looking for names, you won't find them here, unless those names have been reported in the news.  What you will find is where the "Families Stand."

GENOVESE CRIME FAMILY#2
There has been a lot of busts going around the last few months, and the recent arrest of five ranking members of the family who are allegedly involved in union shakedowns hasn't helped the Genovese Crime Family, however, they are the biggest family in New York City.  Perhaps not the strongest even with the biggest amount of members.

GAMBINO CRIME FAMILY#1
While many speculate on two different men running this family, here is what is factual.  Both men are Sicilian, and they have really gained steam and not in the way you'd likely suspect.  Not only do the Gambino's have strong and large Sicilian ties, but have advanced into Canada forging ties with N'drangheta, which means the family is expanding into other countries.

LUCCHESE CRIME FAMILY#5
2017 was not the year for the Lucchese's as we saw a major bust that found Steven Crea, Matthew Madonna, and Joseph DiNapoli arrested, which according to the FBI is the hierarchy of the family. It followed with another indictment of 19 members of the Lucchese's, which includes racketeering and murder which could seriously put the Lucchese's in a deep hole.

BONANNO CRIME FAMILY#4
Of those most problematic of the families, put the Bonanno's right at the top. Last year they allowed the federal government to record audio and visual of an induction ceremony.  To make matters even more troublesome is that they officially made an "informant."

COLOMBO CRIME FAMILY#3
What always makes for interesting conversation is the lack of conversation about the Colombo crime family.  According to the FBI Carmine Persico still sits atop the food chain and running the family from his 8X12 in Butner, North Carolina. What remains to be seen is whether Persico can keep a grip on the family after both of his sons are in prison.  The regime that has long been strong armed by Persico could be coming to an end and changes could be on the horizon for the Colombo's for the first time in decades.

So where does that leave us?  In my opinion the Gambino's have overtaken the Genoveses's as the powerhouse in New York City.  Just the confluence of added power coming from Canada and abroad is enough to put them there.  While the Genovese's have a bigger core group and associates, they just can't seem to stay off the radar in any shape or form.  That's good news for the Gambino's, and bad news for the Lucchese's and Bonanno's who seem to be struggling to survive.
