GERMANY'S MAFIA PRESENCE QUADRUPLES IN A DECADE

Not many would suspect that the Italian mafia has major roots in Germany, but they do.  In a report published a short time ago, the two main groups in Germany, the Sicilian Cosa Nostra and N'drangheta in 2008 had only 136 members total in Germany.  Move forward to June 2017, and those numbers have changed drastically.

The Sicilian faction has grown to 124 members which is a 520% increase since 2008.  The other side of that being N'drangheta has grown from around 70 members to 333, an increase of 455%.  It wasn't until 2007 that the mafia came to the public's immediate knowledge.  It took a brazen shoot out between six members of the mafia, which was a dispute between two N'drangheta clans in the town of Duisburg, which left six people dead.

The German Government has been outspoken against organized crime in Germany and they firmly believe that the numbers could actually be closer to 1,000 versus 500.  Over the years German authorities have taken $5.6 million dollars in assets related to mafia figures and enterprises and also these "organized criminals" invest $100 billion yearly to Germany's economy.

In the last decade alone, there has only been 102 investigations into Italian organized crime groups versus 900 investigations in Jihadists which is expected in 2017. It remains to be seen how Germany is able to handle the enormous mafia presence in Germany, but they are working close to the Italian consulate, in hopes of bringing the same sort of laws which have semi-crippled the mafia in Italy.
